03 27 2003 Public Agenda THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWNSHIP OF ORO-MEDONTE PUBLIC MEETING RE: PROPOSED SMOKING IN WORKPLACES BY-LAW March 27, 2003 @ 7:02 p.m. at the Municipal Council Chambers of the Township of Oro-Medonte Present: Mayor J. Neil Craig Deputy Mayor Walter Dickie Councillor Ralph Hough Councillor Paul Marshall Councillor Harry Hughes Councillor Ruth Fountain Regrets: Councillor Don Bell Staff Present: Marilyn Pennycook, Clerk; Janette Teeter, Clerk's Assistant Also Present: Shawna Fralick (Simcoe County District Health Unit), Susan Close (Simcoe County District Health Unit), John Waugh (Lite FM) Mayor J. Neil Craig called the meeting to order and explained the public meeting had been called under the authority of the Ontario Municipal Act, Section 115, S.O. 2001, C.25 which authorizes municipalities to pass by-laws with respect to the smoking of tobacco in workplaces. Notice of the Public Meeting was distributed to various business owners and residents of the Township. It was posted on the Township website, as well as advertised in the Orillia Packet and Times, the Barrie Examiner and the Midland Free Press on February 28, 2003. The following person expressed concerns: Shawna Fralick (Simcoe County District Health Unit). To date, there had been no correspondence received re: the Proposed Smoking in Workplaces By-law. There being no further comments or questions, the meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m. SPECIAL PUBLIC MEETING (proposed Smokinf In Workplaces By-law) Mayor's Statement: This Public Meeting has been called under the authority of the Ontario Municipal Act, Section 115, S.O. 2001, C.25 which authorizes municipalities to pass by-laws with respect to the smoking of tobacco in workplaces. To date, the Council of the Corporation of the Township of Oro-Medonte has not made a decision on the proposed Smoking In Workplaces by-law other that it proceed to a Public Meeting. Only after comments are received from the Public, Township Staff and requested Agencies within an appropriate time period, will Council make a decision on this draft by-law. NOTICE of the Public Meeting was distributed to various business owners and residents of the Township. It was posted on the Township website, as well as advertised in the Orillia Packet and Times, the Barrie Examiner and the Midland Free Press on February 28th, 2003. (The Mayor then asks the Clerk if there has been any correspondence received on this matter). ALL PERSONS present will be afforded the opportunity of asking questions in respect to the proposed by-law. (The Mayor now turns the meeting over to the audience for comments, etc.) (Comments from the floor.) FINAL STATEMENT Council wishes to thank all those in attendance for your patiicipation and will consider comments before reaching a decision.
