03 11 1996 Oro-Medonte History Committee - MinutesTOWNSHIP OF ORO-MEDONTE HISTORY COMMITTEE MEETING March 11, 1996 The Township of Oro-Medonte History Committee met this evening at the Township of Oro Administration Building in the Committee Room, in accordance with the revolution passed at the Committee meeting held on February 19, 1996. The following members were present: Tim Crawford Jadeen Henderson Henry Neufeld Mary Garbutt Walter Hutchinson Carl Campetelli Absent Loreen TRITEWT Lucas Bernice Hickling Earl Robertson Beverley Hunter Opening: The meeting was opened by the Chairman at 7:35 p.m. Minutes: The Minutes of the last regular meeting held on February 19, 1996 were on motion of Jadeen Henderson and Walter Hutchinson adopted as printed and received. Carried Business arsing from the meeting. - February 19, 1996 None brought forward Correspondence. Communications. etc. (a) Presented a letter forwarded by the Secretary to G. Glen Parker in response to his letter, which was presented to the last meeting, forwarding a copy of the John Robert Bell family tree showing names of descendants, including names Glen Parker had referred to in his letter. This copy was one that Earl Robertson had in his family history files. (b) Secretary advised that a cheque had been received from Lillian (Rouse) Tennant for a copy of 'Kith'N' Kin' and that a copy had been forwarded to her by Township Office staff, Feb. 21/96. (c) A letter from Scholastice Canada Ltd., Richmond,Hill, Ont., advising of a book entitled "Eleanor's Dairy" which is an account of Upper Canada Canadian Life for early settlers the book deals with the trials and triumphs of life in the 1830's. Also enclosing an order form. Several members of the Committee are familiar with the book. (d) Presented a letter from the Deputy -Clerk regarding the opening of the addition to the Administration Building, advising that only staff and Council were present in orderthat the epployees could have a tour and become familiar with the new facility. And further that should an. official opening be scheduled, the History Committee would likely be invited. The letter is in response to the concern of members of the Committee expressed at the last meeting. (e) The Chairman presented a letter from the Oro Farm Boys, wishing to express their appreciation to the members of the History Committee for their participation in the Farm Heritage Day 2, last fall with exhibits and displays that are always so informative and enjoyed by everyone attending. A special thank you to Tim Crawford for his dedication to Heritage Days? with Video of the harvesting of crops through to sauare dance calling by Gordan 2 - It was moved by Jadeen Henderson and seconded by Mary Garbutt that the Correspondence as presented and the action taken, be accepted as satisfactory and same be filed for reference. And that the book entitled "Ealeanor's Dairy" not be ordered for the History Committee. The Chairman next informed the Committee that he had met with Norman Hazlett of Forrest Home area and had enjoyed reminiscing with him od times in his his olden days. He then presented Tim with several account books - Rural School of the area and other books. The Chairman also reported on the matter of the African Church. Old & Unfinished Business (a) Report from members attending the Oro-Medonte Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting held on March 7, 1996, at which the Oro-Medonte Trail Association along with the Huronia Trails and Greenways attended to .make a presentation with regard to the abandonment of theCN Rail_line from Barrie to Orillia. As advised in a letter from Rosemary Dunsmore, which had been presented to the last meeting. Members that attended the meeting - Loreen (Rice) Lucas, Earl Robertson, Walter Hutchinson,d Jadeen Henderson. The members that attendeet.h6t it had been difficult to hear the speaker with the slide and video presentation, therefore not as many questions had been asked. It was mentioned that in cases like thdSthe Municipality purhhased the land and would be responsible for updating the trail and maintenance of same. A concern with respect to liability. ATV and Dirt Bikes would not be permitted. It wqs left that the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee investigate further by appointing a Committee from within the Rec. Committee, Trails Association and possibly a member from the History Committee. At least that appeared to be the understanding of those attending from this Committee. (b) Report from the Chairman regarding information to be included in the Township Newsletter that would compliment the History Committee, as had been requested in a memo presented to the last meeting. The Chairman presented a draft of same which was agreed to by the members (c) Suggestions regarding notification. of meetings or rescheduling of same. It was left that present method of notification by telephone be continued and that where applicalble message be left on answering machine. (d) The matter of Co -Chair from a member of the Former Medonte area was again brought forward. Both members present from the former Medonte area felt tha t they could not commit.,to any further positions at this time. It was left that the Chairman approach Beverley Hunter as whether she would be interested. New Business (a) 1996 Projects - as well as what has been started to continue with preparation for a booklet on the 1920's - documents - family life - gather photos, etc. - open for further suggestions. (b) Workshop meeting to plot information on Township map ash%een started. To meet at the home of Mary Garbutt on Thursday lnvar1 (cont'd) - 3 - March 14, 1996 at 7:15 p.m. Continue with similar plotting of important historic sites, cemeteries, Churches, enterprises, etc. At present very little has been marked at the map started,with respect of the former Medonte area, since no members from that area had been present at the last workshop meeting. There being no further matters brought before the meeting it was moved by Walter Hutchinson that the meeting adjourn to meet again on Monday, April 8, 1996, unless otherwise notified.
