The Township of Oro-iMhedonte History Committee met this evening at
the Township Administration Building in the Committee Room, in
accordance with the resolution passed at the Committee meeting,held
on Monday January o, 1996, to meet on Iv.onday, February 12, 1990,
unless otherwise notified. All members that could be contacted by
telephone were advised that the meeting h,:d been postponed to
Londay, February 19, 1996.

(c) [resented a letter from G. Glen Parker with respect to tracing
family ancestors. Some corres,. ordence in tnis regard had been
compiled and forwarded earlier in 139' , as requested. Letter
:quotes listing cf early sc ttlers in the County publication
k Histcry of Simcoe County" by Hunter, 1i:sting t::c early
settlers in Oro Township before 1837. Two of the four names
included in the list, appear as owners of property on the lots
as shown or the Township map included in "Kith 'N' Kin",
namely Peter iv.cCallum, Cor.. 10, lot 6(NE4) and George Robertson
Con13, lot 10(Wz). Naxies not shown on the map Janes Naish
(also known as Nash) Con. 13, lot 13, and James Tabor, Con 13,
lot i4 (4-) . Letter makes enquiry as to what was the source
of information and possibly that thc source may provide other
clues. Letter also mentions that James N`isle, the relative
of most direct interest may have arrived in Oro in 1831. He
makes further reference to rages in "Kith 'II' Kin" mentioning
a large influx of indigent ii..n:igtanta froi.. Great Britain
arriving to settle in Or: in1831. tiecin enquiry as to any
scurce t.,a.t would help to confirm -ghat his relatives may have
been among the immigrants. tilso enquiry cf any information

publications.

(d) Presented copy of letter to the Editor of the Packet Ind Times
issue of February 7, ic)96 . k letter of enquiry as to hoto
obtain a copy of "Kith 'Iv'' Kin", and copy of Secretary's
letter of reply. Lcrecn (Rice) Luccc advised that she had elso
forwarded a memo to Lillian (Rouse) Tennant advising that if
she for girded a cheque to the Township office a copy v4ouid

(b) Report re: African Church - although this matter was on the
Agenda of the last Council meeting - no report was available
for this meeting.
The Chairperscn for the meeting advised that Tim:; Crawford had
forwarded a letter of support to the Collingviood Blacks with
respect keeping the name of a Road in Grey County as Negro Road.
New Business
(a) The matter of the History Committee not being notified or
invited to the Opening of the new addition to the Township
A4Iriinistration Building was brought before the Committee
for discussion. It was mentioned that the opening of the
Addition was as much history as the opening of the Administrtion
Building originally.
(b) Walter Hutchinson requested that Congratulations be extended
to Loreen (Rice) Lucas on the completion and publication of
her Book, entitled "Outhouses and Apple Pie". All members of
the Committee concurred and extended their congratulations.
A copy of the Book was presented for view by Loreen (Rice)
Lucas. All members present asked to have the privilege to
purchase e copy -of the book after the meeting.
(c) Several other matters were presented for discussion:
(i) the matter of appointing a 2nd Vice Chairman as
suggested at the last meeting, this person be
a member frci: the former Medonte Township. This
will again be presented to the next meeting.
(ii) The memb •rs pr•escnt were also concerned as to how the
members from the former L: Conte Township be contacted
regarding meetings or rescheduling cf same. Since the
rescheduling of the February meeting had not been
successful, although efforts were Lade to contact
the members of forI.,er ledente . o .cfu11y this can be
resolved for future meetings.
There being no further husir:ees at Land it was moved by
Earl Robertson that the meeting adjourn t 9:15 p.m., to
meet again on ivlonciay, 'march 11, 199u bt 7:30 p.m., unless
otherwise notified.
