HISTORY COIvMITTEE MEETING
April 29, 1993
The Township of Oro History Committee met this evening at the Township
of Oro Administration Building in the Board Room. All members having
been notified by telephone..
The foliosing members were present:

Absent: Walter Hutchinson, Sandra Shelswell
Opening: The Chairperson opened the meeting at 7:35 p.m.
Minutes: The Minutes of the last regular meeting held on March 11,
1993, which had been copied for all members, were on
motion of Earl Robertson and Tim Crawford adopted as
printed and received.
Correspondence and Communications
Presented a Memo from the Clerk of the Township of Oro forwarding a
copy of leter from the County of Simcoe Museum requesting biographical
information on the 7 Wardens from the Township of 0ro. The purpose
of same being for inclusion in the celebration of the County of Simcoe
150 years of service. The Museum is organizing a major display on the
Wardens of Simcoe County from 1843 to present.
Oro Reeves that served as Wardens of Simcoe County are:
John Steele - 1873 D. Smith Campbell - 1954
James Ross - 1895 George MacKay - 1967
Duncan McKinlay - 1925 Allan K. McLean - 1980
Herbert J. Crawford 1935
The Secretary had compiled some information an each of the WE:rdens
and Committee members are to add any additional information obtained
or to be received in order that same may be completed and returned to
the Township Clerk for prewentation to Oro Council and forwarding to
Simcoe County Museum.
It was moved by Henry Neufeld and seconded by Tim Crawford that the
biographical information and specific accomplishments or aneedrtes
for each of the Wardens as completed or to be added, be returned to
the Township Clerk for necessary action and forwarding to the County
of Simcoe Museum as requested for the major display of the Wardens of
Simcoe County from 1843 to present, as part of the celebration of the
County of Simcoe's 150 years of service.
Presented a letter from the Deputy Clerk who is also the Secretary of
the Oro Canada Committee, as an invitation to the History Committee to
participate in the Annual Festivities at Oro Memorial Park on Thursday,
July 1, 1993. The invitation is fof members of the Committee to attend
s.nd"display the numerous excellent photos accumulated over the years
along with all the historical publications and pamphlets. The letter
requests a reply as to the Committee participation.

It was moved by Bernice Hickling and seconded by Jadeen Henderson
that all members of the Committee attand at the Canada Day Festivities
to be held at Oro Memorial Park, on July 1, 1993 and at alternate
times take their turn at the display of photcgraphsnd the publications
of the Township of Oro, and further that the Deputy Clerk be advised
accordingly.
Represented letter from the Township Clerk forwarding resolution of
Oro Council requesting the History Committee to participate in the
submitting suggestions for a name or names for the Townships of Oro
and Medonte under the newly proposed restructuring of Simcoe County
as is presently submitted for approval and implementation.
After consideration the members of the Committee felt that the presently
used name of Oro/Medonte would seem to be satisfactory. It is also
suggested that the restructured Township could be called Islay, since
that is were the early settlers to Oro and Medonte came from. Should
any members of the Committee come up with any further suggestions,
same are to be forwarded to the Township Clerk.
Presented a letter from the Township Clerk with respect to the 150th
year Celebration of the County of Simcoe, forwarding a copy of the
correspondence received from _.: _, A*.,..m the County of Simcoe
Director, Community and Resource Development, announcing their
Sesquicentenial Celebtatiors that are to take place this year and
would welcome suggestions that the Township might wish to participate
in during the year. The letter had been before Oro Council and Council
in turn directed that a copy be sent to the History Committee, and
advising that Oro Council had tossed around a few suggestions as to
how Oro might recognize. the 150th Anniversary of the County of Simcoe.
And further that the Oro Canada Day Committee will be including the
recognition in their program on Canada Day, July 1, 1993 at Oro Memorial
Park.
The Committee will be placing a not ation in the Booklet - "Hills of
Ore and other Pioneer Landmarks' of the Celebration of the 150th year
of the County of Simcoe service.
The Committee wish to also advise that two proposals have been suggested
through the Simcoe County Historical Association contact person who
in turn forwarded same to the Council of Simcoe County. (1) suggesting
that other Townships prepare similar booklets as the "Hills of Oro
and other Pioneer Landmarks, which through the County ScnotO. Board
could be reprinted and used in the Class Rooms as part of the
ciriculum in the County Schools (2) the dedication of the Penetang
Road as a Heritage Road during the Celebration year of the County.
Also further tha t the Committee is prepared to participate in any
proposals that may be suggested to mark the County celebration.
Old and Unfinished Business
The matter of completing the booklet "Hills of Oro and Other Pioneer
Landmarks" was again brought forward for the final review before it
is finalized for printing.

The booklet "Hills of Oro and Other Pioneer Landmarks" was again
presented for final review before printing of same.
The Chairperson advised that she had been working with Tim Crawford
with the corrections and additions which had been suggeatr by
Welter Hutchinson and Earl Robertson when reviewing some of the art
work, regarding the display of harness and various other items that
are to appear in the booklet. The booklet as revised was presented
for review asfedited by Tim Crawford and re -read by the Chairperson.
The Chairperson advised that she had attended a meeting of Council
to present the contents of the Booklet for their approval to have
the booklet printed and suggestions as to what Printers to use or
whether it could be prepared on Township equipment. Council had
suggested that the booklet be done be printers. The Township Clerk
is to give a list of 1 nting places used by the Township. She had
also advised Council that the Simcoe County Board of Education had
indicated an interest to print the Booklet upon approval that they
could reprint same for use in the County schools in their ciriculum,
for Oro Schools and possibly other schools in the County. The
Council had indicated that the printing should be done by a Printing
firm. After consideration and further discussion the following
action_ was taken:
Moved by Tim Crawford and seconded by Earl Robertson that it is
the intent of the History Committee to recommend to Oro Council
that we provide the Simcoe County Board of Education the right to
duplicate as many copies of the booklet as are necessary for Class
room use, within the schools of Simcoe County Board of Education,
and that the Board pay for411 costs of publishing the Teacher's
Mannual, and that the Township bf Oro be provided with at least
15 copies of the resulting Manual, one for each member of the
History Committee, with the balance kept on file for reference.
Tim Crawford and Loreen Lucas are to complete the booklet as has
now been finally reviewed, for printing of same.
The Chairperson is to obtain names of printing firms from the Town-
ship Clerk and arrange for contacting the firms for quotations and
times by which the printing can be completed.
Earl Robertson advised that he had contacted John Moore with respect
to the enquiry about the Hardie family and that John Moore has
correstonded with Brenda Ruffet who had made the enquiries about the
members of the Hardie family.
Jpdeen Henderson advised that she had spoken to I.rs. Gilly Ayers
(Edna Johnston) regarding the enquiry by Dianne Childs about her
Great Grandfather Lauclan Galbraith and his son Donald. It appears
that both had drwoned in Bass Lake while bathing. The Johnston
Dairy which was the enquiry ob, by Dianne childs is in the hands of
Mrs. Gilly Ayers. JJdeen Henderson had replied to Dianne Childs
and given her the address of Mrs. Ayers who had agreed to coresspond
with Dianne Child3 wish to make some enquiries regarding same.
There being no further business at hand it was moved by Earl
Robertson that the meeting adjourn at 9:45 p.m.
