Bayview Park 687 Lakeshore Rd E: This is a follow up of Roz's request for information on the Bayview Memorial Park Cairn. I have talked to many old timers about the Cairn, and no one can tell me where the stones came from. The Twsp is redesigning the front entrance to the park so this Cairn needs to be moved and as you can see from my pictures the Cairn is in bad shape and the Twsp does not think that it would survive a move. I asked Roz if the Heritage Committee could be involved in the new design of the entrance and if possible, could maybe one stone be designed into their new vision. This may not happen until 2025 but if the monument continues to deteriorate then it may have to be taken down sooner and some of the stones and plaques stored until it then could be incorporated into the new design. FIRE BRIGADE& HALL BELL The fire bell that was originally on Metcalf Hall where the Fire (Bucket) Brigade's equipment was kept on the premises. When the building was torn down the bell was mounted on Joslin's Blacksmith Shop. When Mrs.Joslin sold the Shop in 1953, the bell was put in storage. There seems to be no timeline as to how long it was in storage and where it went into storage, but at some point the bell was put on the Bell Tower at the Cedar Brook entrance of the Hawkestone Park. In 1972, the Hawkestone Fire Hall was built, and the bell was moved there. There is a photo of the Metcalf Hall from 1910 and the bell is not on the roof at that time, but in a photo from 1927 the bell is there. **Story of Oro 1972: Fire Protection - Fire Fighting equipment in earlier days was a collection of fire pails and a few ladders. These were stored at Metcalf;s Hall. There was a fire bell on the roof. When Robert Kendall had the hall taken down, the bell and equipment were taken to the blacksmith shop. In 1951 an attempt was made to organize a fire brigade which had James Hurst as chief and twelve volunteers. This soon became inactive, and it was not until 1967 that the village trustees authorized the formation of the Hawkestone Fire Department and a Volunteer firefighters' Association with Tim Jermey as chief, a deputy, two captains and six firefighters. Protection was to be extended beyond the village limits and compensated by a mill rate to be established by the township. A fire truck, water tank and hose were bought and a small building was moved to a site near the hall to house the truck. In 1968,the brigade made an application to become part of the Simcoe County Mutual Aid. The Hawkestone area was extended to meet Shanty Bay and Gurthie areas to the west, Rugby to the north and Orillia to the east. In 1971 Oro Township was organized as a Fire Area. The Hawkestone Brigade became part of this area. The old fire bell had its own small tower on the west side of Main St. A new fire hall was built in 1972 on property immediately north of the railroad - with frontage on main Street. (Pt. Lot 23, Conc. 12) Notes from Village Trustee Events from 1931-71 **1931-Alex Fletcher to act as Fire chief. **1946- $3. Was paid to Mrs.Joslin for rent for fire bell on shop. **1949- Mrs.Joslin requested that the bell be removed. **1953 - Mrs.Joslin sold the garage. The fire bell &fire equipment were removed. The fire bell was put into storage. **1951-The Fire Brigade: -James Hurst as chief. Brigade members were: Gordon Joslin, Ellis Leigh, Jack Leigh, Irwin Westington, Cecil Richardson, Harvey Kendall, Vic Bell, Archie McMillan, Bill Anderson, Mickey Wilson, Clark Crawford, Earl Davies. **1967- Railway signals were installed, fire truck purchased from Crown Asset Corp. The Village The garage moved to the North side of Community Hall for the fire truck. The entrance was paved. by June of that year the Fire Brigade was established, led by Chief Tim Jermey. Hawkestone Volunteer Assoc. Orillia Packet &Times - Canada flag and bicentennial flags were dedicated and raised at the Fire Hall. Thanks was given to the Women's Institute members for spearheading this project and for purchasing the bicentennial flag by Chief Tim Jermey **1969-Tanker truck purchased. **1972 -Orillia Packet &Times - Hawkestone Fire Hall was officially opened with Oro Township Reeve Allan McLean cutting the ribbon with Fire Chief John Hare looking on. ** 2023 The Hawkestone Fire Hall was closed, and a new hall was built at 529 Line 11 North Oro- Medonte and the fire bell is on display at the location. It was only stopped in its chase up Main Street by the efforts of the local fire brigade. The store and dwelling were owned by H.A Adams and valued at $3,0 00 with only small insurance. The stock which belonged to Leigh Bros. was valued at$3,500, which was partly covered by insurance. Miss McKays house and contents valued at$1,500 with no insurance.
