II TWENTY-NINTH MEETING 1997-2000 COUNCIL Council met this evening @ 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Present: Mayor Ian Beard Deputy Mayor Don Bell Councillor Lillian McConnell Councillor Ralph Hough Councillor Neil Craig Councillor Ron Sommers Councillor Ruth Fountain Absent: Staff Present: Jennifer Zieleniewski, CAO/Treasurer, Andria Leigh, Township Planner Also Present: June Beard, Celeste Phillips, Martial Forget, Eileen Bellamy, Ron Bellamy, A. J. Blauer (Packet and Times) Mayor Ian Beard assumed the chair and called the meeting to order, followed by prayer. 1. I I I Councillor Craig commented on the length of the ) name, but agreed that it was liveable. Councillor Hough - people who brought this forward should be commended. c) 7:12 p.m. Public Comment re: Proposed By-law to regulate and prohibit signs and other advertising devices. None. II I . 4. CONSENT AGENDA CORRESPONDENCE: a) Township of Springwater, Notice of Public Meeting re: proposed Official Plan Amendment. Recommendation: Receive and file. 5. COMMUNICATIONS: a) Morley Kells, M.P.P., Ontario Olympics Commissioner, correspondence re: Bill 77. e b) Rochelle Strath, Orillia & District Safe Community Committee, correspondence re: Request to Appoint a Representative from Council to participate. 6. REPORTS OF COMMITTEES: a) Report No. 98-24, Minutes of the Regular Committee of the Whole Meeting held Wednesday, December 23, 1998. b) Minutes of the Oro-Medonte Recreation Steering Committee Meeting held on Thursday, December 3, 1998. c) Minutes of the Oro-Medonte Planning Advisory Committee Meeting held on Tuesday, December 15, 1998. 7. Carried. Motion No.3 Moved by Craig, Seconded by Fountain e Be it resolved that the recommendations listed on the Consent Agenda, Item 7, be received and adopted. Carried. Motion No.4 Moved by Sommers, Seconded by Craig Be it resolved that the correspondence from Morley Kells, M.P.P., Ontario Olympics Commissioner, re: Bill 77 be received and Whereas the Canadian Olympic Association at its regularly scheduled meeting held in Calgary on April 17, 1998 voted to grant approval to the City of Toronto's application to represent Canada's bid to host the 29th Olympiad in 2008 subject to the dictates of the International Olympic Committee Charter; and Whereas the City of Toronto Council on July 9 passed a motion to ratify the agreement between the Canadian Olympic Association and the City that detailed the terms required and outlined the mandate for the operation of Ta- Bid, the organization authorized to present the Toronto bid for the Summer Olympic Games in 2008; and Whereas the Ontario Legislature on December 3, 1998 unanimously endorsed a Bill introduced by Morley Kells, the Ontario Olympics Commissioner, to support the City of Toronto's bid to host the 29th Summer Olympic Games and encourage participation by all of Ontario's communities in the bid proposal and subsequent presentation of the Olympiad; and Whereas the International Sports Federations representing the 140 athletic competitions and the IOC delegates who cast the deciding votes in 2001 will be influenced favourably by province-wide public support for the Toronto bid; e Now Therefore Be It Resolved that the Council of the Township of Oro- Medonte endorses the tenets of support called for by the Bill entitled: An Act to endorse the proposed bid of the City of Toronto to host the XXIX Summer Olympic Games, and further that this Council agrees with the principles of "building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play" as described in the lac Charter. Motion No.6 Moved by Sommers, Seconded by Fountain Be it resolved that Report No. 98-24, Minutes of the Regular Committee of the Whole Meeting held Wednesday, December 23, 1998 be received and the recommendations therein adopted. Carried. That By-law No. 1999-1 be read a third time and finally passed, be engrossed by the Clerk, signed and sealed by the Mayor. e Carried. Carried. That By-law No. 1999-5 be read a third time and finally passed, be engrossed by the Clerk, signed and sealed by the Mayor. Carried.
