Dear Sir,
The Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County requests that the Township of Oro-Medonte proclaims September 21, 2020 as
to raise awareness about the stigma and the challenges faced by people living with dementia, their
care partners, and families.

The prevalence of dementia is steadily increasing, affecting more and more Canadians each year. Yet, stigma continues to be
rampant. According to Alzheimer Society research, one in four Canadians said they would feel embarrassed or ashamed if they
had dementia, and almost half said they would not want others to know if they were diagnosed. Stigma also creates
unnecessary loneliness and anxiety for anyone caring for a friend or family member with dementia. In fact, 87 per cent of
caregivers wished others understood the realities of caring for someone with this condition. Of these, two-thirds find the
experience of caring for someone with dementia to be isolating.
Every 65 seconds, someone develops dementia somewhere in the world, and due to our aging population, the number of
people living with dementia in Canada will only continue to rise. While age is a primary risk factor, dementia is not a natural
part of aging. Dementia can occur in individuals in their 50s, 40s, and even 30s, and can be present in the brain for up to 25
years before symptoms occur.
Proclaiming September 21 as in Oro-Medonte would help bolster awareness and help to smash stigma
and myths about this disease. As the number of people living with dementia continues to increase, it is important that people
living with dementia are made to feel accepted, and welcomed, throughout the Township of Oro-Medonte, and that Oro-

families.
We look forward to hearing a positive response towards proclaiming September 21 as Oro-
Medonte!
Sincerely,
Debbie Islam
