From: Ally Marino Sent: May 19, 2019 7:57 PM To: cmclean (a)-oro-medonte.ca Subject: Oro Medonte Heritage Committee Hello! My name is Ally Marino and I was hoping to touch base with you about the Oro Medonte Heritage Committee. I am a parent of three girls who attend Shanty Bay Public School and it has come to the parents' attention that the board has diverted funds and allowed the school to fall into disrepair. There is evidence of this in the 2019 capital plan that the board released in March. When parents contacted to the board they insist that they have done repairs but when asked for evidence of this they have yet to provide it. It appears that the board is doing this intentionally so they can relocate the students without officially closing the school, as there is a moratorium on school closures. They say it is a "temporary" relocation but it will not be. They have deemed the school "prohibitive to repair" which means they are not going to fix anything that breaks. They are going to relocate the students until the moratorium is lifted and then close the school officially. There is a large community wide concern for the building and school, as it has been a pivotal cornerstone of this community for 100 years! Once the school is closed they will be quick to sell it and then who knows what will happen to this important structure. The community has been meeting weekly to organize and fight the closure and subsequent tear down of the building. Several generations of long-standing community members have come to the meetings to state their concern. Is there a way to initiate identifying this property for consideration as a heritage building? We just want to protect this building and the school that means so much to the community. The school board is looking at dollars and sense and completely ignoring the value that this building has on our community. Thank you for taking the time to listen to these concerns and I look forward to hearing from you. Ally Marino This email was scanned by Bitdefender Page 9 of 70 4.c) Correspondence dated June 11, 2019 from Glenn B. Hodges, Laura M. H... June 11, 2019 Glenn B. Hodges Laura M. Hodges John B. Hodges 5379 Wyndam Lane Brighton, MI 48116 Request for Designation of Home and Property as a Heritage / Historical Site Dear Members of the Oro-Medonte Township Heritage Committee: We are contacting you to request that the home and property located at 567 Line 11 S., Section R01-39 (Concession 12, Lot 24), be designated as a protected heritage / historical site. This home was previously listed in the historical register on March 28, 2018 under Heritage Motion #HC180319-5 and Council Motion #C180328-9. Prior to explaining the reason for this request, we would like to clarify our connection to this home and property. We are the direct descendants of Richard Hodges who built this home no later than 1844. The direct line of descent is: Richard Hodges / William Hodges / John A. Hodges / John B. Hodges / John B. Hodges / Glenn B. and Laura M. Hodges / John B. Hodges. Richard Hodges is the great, great, great grandfather of Glenn B. and Laura M. Hodges, who are siblings, and the great, great, great, great grandfather of John B. Hodges, who is the son of Glenn B. Hodges. This home was in our family for around 100 years when it was sold to the Girl Guides of Canada in 1938. There are numerous reasons why this home should be granted a designation as a heritage / historical site. The most fundamental of these reasons pertains to the fact that the town of what is now known as "Hawkestone", was originally founded by Richard Hodges, as the town of "Hodges' Landing" and that the home and property in question were a major focus of activity during the years after the founding of the town and its early development. There is a wealth of evidence, provided below, to support this fundamental assertion. The property on which St. Helen's is built is Concession 12, Lot 24 in what is now Hawkestone. This property was purchased by Richard Hodges in 1830 (History of Simcoe County, p. 142). He had arrived from Bridgewater, England in 1830 with his wife Ann (Kith 'N Kin, p. 155; The Story of Oro, p. 256). There is a great deal of evidence indicating Richard Hodges was very actively developing this property and his business in the early 1830s. An example of this can be found in the History of Simcoe Country by Andrew F. Hunter, 1909. "Hodges' Landing received its name Page 10 of 70 4.c) Correspondence dated June 11, 2019 from Glenn B. Hodges, Laura M. H... from Richard Hodges, a native of England, who settled there in 1830, on lot 24 beside Lake Simcoe, and his son, William, born here in 1834, may also be classed among the pioneers. Capt. Davis settled on the east side of the Hawkestone Creek about the same time as Richard Hodges on the west side." "Duncan Gilchrist was one of the prominent settlers in the northern tract now under review. In 1813, Mr. Gilchrist had belonged to the volunteer coast guard in the west of Scotland, under the Duke of Argyle. He came from Bowmore, Islay, in 1834, with his family, landed at Hodges' Landing, and they made their way along the rough settlers' road and through the bush to lot 6 in the 8th concession, some two miles or more northwest of Galbraith's Corner." (History of Simcoe Country, p. 154). Another set of references from the same book includes the following: "The traveller who embarked at Holland Landing could make for "The Narrows," or "Shingle Bay," or Hodge's (sic) Landing (Hawkestone), or Kempenfeldt, or "The Head of the Bay," from all of which places were trails leading across to Georgian Bay; and according to the traveller's destination, so was his course through Lake Simcoe. At an early date, Hodges' Landing, now known as Hawkestone, took an important position amongst these landing places; and many people landed there on their way into the northern part of Oro and into Medonte. So considerable was the influx at that point, about 1832, that Wellesley Richie, the Government Agent, remained with gangs of men on the Coldwater Road, at Bass Lake, to place new settlers on their lands, both those who came via Hodges' Landing and those who landed at "The Narrows." "A colonization road into upper Oro was cut through from Hodges' Landing at an early date, and joined with the earlier route from Kempenfeldt to Penetanguishene, at Dalston of the present. The Hodges' Landing road soon became a feeder of the Penetanguishene Road, and owing to hills and the big swamp on the lower portion of the latter, it probably shared for a time as much as, if not more traffic than, the Kempenfeldt part of the same route. But in 1847, through the instrumentality of the Hon. W. B. Robinson, Commissioner of Public Works, and member of the Legislative Assembly for Simcoe, the Kempenfeldt-Penetanguishene Road was thoroughly cleared out to the width of sixty-six feet, and made passable for its entire length of over thirty miles. This step removed any further necessity for using the Hodges' Landing road. But, as late as 1851, we find the road distinctly marked on the county map in Smith's "Canada: Past, Present, and Future," which, however, might have been copied from some old map, as one map -maker copies from another." (History of Simcoe County, P. 142 —143). Another reference from the same book worth noting is that under the heading "Settlers Before 1837" it references Richard Hodges owning Concession 12, Lot 24 (History of Simcoe County, p. 298). Initial wooden structures were erected shortly after the purchase of the land. The structures were used for housing for the family, as well as housing for settlers arriving into the Hawkestone area, while their cabins were being built. Richard Hodges also had a store and provided provisions for the incoming settlers (Kith 'N Kin, p. 155) and in various sources was identified as a farmer, a merchant and an inn keeper, all of which appear to have been correct. The land agent, Wellesley Richey, had his headquarters at Hodges' Landing from 1831-1832 (Kith 'N Kin, p. 155; The Story of Oro, p. 257). By 1844, Richard Hodges had built the home in question, known as St. Helens. This is best evidenced by two images made by Titus Hibbert Ware, which are located at the Toronto Public Library. The first was done in pen, brown ink and Page 11 of 70 4.c) Correspondence dated June 11, 2019 from Glenn B. Hodges, Laura M. H... watercolor showing the right rear side of the home and outbuildings with the wharf (https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/detail. isp?Entt=RDMDC-PICTU RES-R-388&R=DC-PICTU RES -R-388). The second was done in pen and brown ink and shows the left rear side of the home and outbuildings, the wharf and the British flag (https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/detail. isp?Entt=RDMDC-PICTU RES-R-387&R=DC-PICTU RES -R-387). Both are dated 19 September 1844. It is noteworthy that if you go to Google and type in "Hawkestone, Ont.", two images appear, one of which is the first of these two images. Also, at the Toronto Public Library, if you type in "Hawkestone, Ont." under their search function, three images appear, two of which are the paintings mentioned above. In other words, St. Helens is a major face to the world for Hawkestone to this day. Additional references to Hodges' Landing are indicated on a series of maps at the Simcoe County Archives dating between 1841 and 1853 (e.g. 1850 map of North Simcoe County, 979-38 #1, among two others) which was sometimes referred to as "Hodges' Wharf" (Map of the County of Simcoe revised and improved by W. Gibbard, P.LA., 1853) There are other important connections to the community that Hodges Landing and St. Helen's have had for nearly 190 years. The wharf at Hodges' Landing and St. Helen's is also connected to the maritime history of Lake Simcoe. There are multiple references to the Peter Robinson, built in 1832 and launched in 1834 and one of the earliest steamers on Lake Simcoe as travelling on a regular basis to Hodges' Landing. This ship was renamed "The Simcoe" in 1839 after an overhaul. (The Story of Oro, p. 113 and from the Maritime Records at the Simcoe County Archive). There are also other references to steamers landing at Hodges' Landing. For example: "The calling places for the steamer in this township were Shanty Bay and Hodges, now the flourishing Village of Hawkestone." (Pioneer Papers, p. 25). Another example includes the following: "The Emily May's ports of calling included Holland Landing, Belle Ewart, Beaverton, Orillia, Hodges Landing and Barrie." (The Story of Oro, p. 113.) The fact that there was a "Hodges' Landing Road", which originated on the property where St. Helen's is located, and used to facilitate immigrants' relocation into the Medonte and the Georgian Bay area is also of note. In addition, following the sale of the property and St. Helens to the Girl Guides of Canada in 1938, this home and property have served as the "Bonita Glen Girl Guide Camp" since 1940. (Several years ago, Glenn B. Hodges was told by a local historian that this home was the origin of Girl Guide cookies. The home's roof needed repair and a bake sale was held to raise money for the new roof. This worked so well that it was carried over into other money raising efforts and the on-going sale of Girl Guide cookies. Glenn is currently working with the Girl Guides to see if this is true.) Another potential historical link relates to the possibility that this property and home was the most extreme northern end of the "underground railway" for people of African descent escaping slavery in the southern US. This was told to Glenn B. Hodges by a local historian, not as a fact, but as more of a speculation, which has been discussed among local historians. This may be due to the fact there were one or more underground tunnels leading from the shore to the Page 12 of 70 4.c) Correspondence dated June 11, 2019 from Glenn B. Hodges, Laura M. H... home with a hidden staircase and door. Other speculations include that it may have been used to smuggle fish or alcohol, though none of these speculations has been confirmed. There is also an official historical marker on a large granite boulder near to the property, which includes a number of details regarding the wharf, the "large house called St. Helen's (1844)", the tunnels, the steamers and some other facts. The marker is titled: "Historic Hawkestone (Hodges' Landing) and was provided by the Township of Oro-Medonte; Ian Beard, Mayor; July 1, 2001 A Millennium Project With the generous participation of the Simcoe County Council, and Historical Association." Although there is undoubtedly far more to the story of Hodges' Landing and St. Helen's, we believe the above information makes a strong case for the designation of St. Helen's and the accompanying property at Concession 12, Lot 24 as a heritage / historical site. We respectfully request that the members of the Oro-Medonte Township Heritage Committee give this there full consideration. Please feel free to contact Glenn B. Hodges at his e-mail address: aworld2c2002@vahoo.com or his cell phone at (248) 961-1612 if you have questions regarding the above information or regarding any other aspect of the request for heritage / historical designation. Thank you and best regards, Dr. Glenn Black Hodges, PhD Laura Marie Hodges John Black Hodges Page 13 of 70 4.c) Correspondence dated June 11, 2019 from Glenn B. Hodges, Laura M. H... From: Glenn Hodges <aworld2c2002@yahoo.com> Sent: Friday, June 14, 2019 12:15 PM To: McLean, Catherine <cmclean @oro-medonte. ca>; John Hodges <123rustyshackleford@gmail.com> Subject: St. Helen's as a Hotel CAUTION: This email originated from outside of Oro-Medonte's email system. Do not open links or attachments you were not specifically expecting, even from known senders. If you have any doubts, please contact I.T. Dear Catherine, I just had a couple more thoughts I wanted to share with you regarding St. Helen's. In the paintings by Titus Hibbert Ware, it refers to St. Helen's as "Hodges Hotel". This speaks to the nature of Richard Hodges' on-going efforts dating back to at least 1831 to provide housing for in -coming settlers, but may represent an evolution in his thinking to provide a more sophisticated and enjoyable experience along the lines of an actual hotel where people would visit for reasons of leisure rather than to simply facilitate relocation. I do not know if this was his intent, but it suggests to me that he was referring to it as a hotel, otherwise it is somewhat unlikely the artist would have simply named it a hotel. I also wonder how this artist came to make these paintings. Did Richard Hodges pay him to do so or was this something he did of his own volition as he was passing through the area? I found a little more artwork from this artist and it has the common theme of residences in the area around lake Simcoe and beyond. I tried to see if I could learn a little more about him as an individual and will be receiving some materials today from the Toronto Public Library. There is an entire chapter on him in the East Georgian Bay Historical Journal from 1981. If there is anything else relevant to Hodges' Landing or St. Helen's, I will let you know. In any case, it may also be appropriate to think of St. Helen's as the first hotel in Hawkestone or possibly on Lake Simcoe. Please let me know if you have any questions or additional information.
