RE: An Invitation to Participate in the Strategic Planning Process for Sustainable Severn Sound
Dear Mayor Hughes:
In June of 2015, the Sustainability Plan Steering Committee affirmed the launch of a review of the
Severn Sound Sustainability Plan and the initiation of a strategic planning process (Sustainability Action
Plan) for the Sustainable Severn Sound project. This endeavour will bring the key stakeholders together
to discuss the future of the sustainability program.
The Severn Sound Sustainability Plan was completed in 2008 and received endorsement in 2009 by the
nine (9) municipal partners located in the Severn Sound watershed. Sustainable Severn Sound was
established in 2010 with support from the watershed municipalities to aid in the implementation of the
Severn Sound Sustainability Plan. Sustainable Severn Sound has been successful since that time in
supporting multiple sustainability initiatives including:
Facilitating municipal staff training on the Severn Sound Sustainability Plan;
Developing a Draft Tree By-law for application within watershed municipalities;
Sharing and distributing sustainability research, news and information with municipal staff and
partners;
Advocating and educating the community in regards to sustainable behaviours;
Executing the 2012 Sustainability Summit in partnership with Lakehead University;
Redesigning and launching the Sustainable Severn Sound website in 2014;
Initiating and distributing our newsletter, Sustainability News;
Selecting and researching the 64 sustainability indictors to provide the foundation for our
sustainability reporting program;
Composing and finalizing the 2014 Baseline Report;
Participating in numerous committees to increase awareness and implementation of Plan
actions; and
Developing connections with community organizations and educational institutions throughout
the watershed to collaborate on projects to enhance sustainable actions and efforts.

11.c) Mayor H.S. Hughes, correspondence dated September 14, ...
More recently, I have spoken one-on-one with the Sustainability Plan Steering Committee members and
completed an extensive community-focused survey analyzing the awareness, attitudes, behaviours and
barriers of the community in relation to sustainability. All of these important conversations and research
will inform and guide the work we are beginning as part of our strategic planning process.
On Thursday, October 15, 2015 from 9:00am until 2:30pm, a representative from the Regional Economic
Development Branch from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) will be leading
the Sustainability Plan Steering Committee through a Planning Session as part of this important process.
Sustainable Severn Sound would like to extend an invitation to the Township of Oro-Medonte to refer
one political designate in addition to the appointed staff member to the Sustainability Plan Steering
Committee. The attendance of a Counci
Development Services will ensure the priorities of the Township are further reflected in the
Sustainability Action Plan.
If a member of your Council would like to attend, please RSVP to tracy@sustainablesevernsound.ca by
Monday, October 5. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions at 705.526.1371 x.112 or
via e-mail at your convenience. Further details including the event location and session agenda will be
distributed in late September.
Thank you for your on-going project support, as well as for your attention to this letter. I look forward to
continuing to work with the Township of Oro-Medonte.
Sincerely,
Tracy Roxborough
