Heritage Property Listing Principles 1) Financial Following Council's Strategic Plan for Financial Stewardship, any property considered for listing on the Municipal Register must be accessed for financial feasibility. • What is the potential impact to property owner? • What are the resource requirements? All recommendations for listing shall include a thorough review of financial impact to the Corporation of the Township of Oro-Medonte, the property owner and other potential stakeholders. 2) Stakeholder Consultation Property owners, businesses, community organizations and any other stakeholder must be considered prior to listing a property. A decision to list a structure should be made with the support of the stakeholders and done so with any potential concerns addressed prior to listing. • How will listing affect the property owner(s)? • What impact does it have on property value? • Is the property owner in support of listing the property/structure? 3) Cultural Value L. A building with cultural value should contribute to the heritage landscape of the community. It should have symbolic and emotional impact on residents, tourists or visitors to the location. • What cultural value does the property/structure have that is tangible and quantifiable? • Is the property/structure a site of historic events or movements of significance? • Is the property/structure associated with any persons or groups that made significant contributions to the community? • Does the property/structure contribute to the understanding of the community or culture? 4) Design Value A property/structure considered for listing should have characteristics that make it stand out from an architectural style or construction standpoint. • Is the style of the building a rare or unique example of architecture or convention? Page 33 of 39 5.e) Update from the Heritage Properties sub -committee. • What unique characteristics separate the building form others of similar age or design that would imply historic value? • Is the property/structure a notable example of a particular material or method of construction? • Is the finish or craftsmanship noteworthy? • Does the property/structure retain most of its original materials and design features? • What is the condition of the property/structure? 5) Historical Significance In order to determine Historic Significance consideration has to be given to factors that go beyond age. The history of the region and the impact made by the property/structure in that context must be considered when adding a location to the Heritage Listing. • Is the property/structure comparatively old within the context of the area? • Is the property/structure a site of know archeological significance such as remains or artifacts? • Is the property/structure an important landmark, does it contribute to the character of the region? • Is/was the use of the property/structure significant? • Does the property/structure have an association with a significant event or activity in the community? Brissette, Marie Subject: RE: seeking assistance with family history for a reunion On Monday, February 17, 2014 9:07:53 PM, Peter McLarty < Dear Geoff The staff at the township office has provided your contact information... I am a great great grandson of William McLarty who settled in Oro Twsp in the mid 1800's. Many of the offspring from his son James moved here to Sault Ste Marie. My only known relatives who still live in your area are the offspring of Mary (May) McLarty and Archie Fletcher. I have created an extensive family tree...and have a contact mailing list for about 30 individuals...which can further connect me to 100's of "relatives". We have not had a "family reunion" in more than 50 years. A small group of us are trying to arrange for a small gathering (30-50) in the Orillia/Barrie area for the last week in June of this year. I did visit the cemetary at the old Knox Presbyterian Church last spring and did find the burial plots of both William and his son James. In my files I have an old copy of "Kith 'n Kin"(?) which has some useful info...including the lot/concession of the original homestead. I did get a copy of the map in Kith'n Kin which shows the location of both William and James lots however the old map does not show the present Hwy 11 and it does not have a scale to help me pin point the exact locations. Some specific questions... 1. Who might I contact to get access to the Old Knox Church and might it be possible for the family to have a "picnic" on the site. 2. Can you recommend a hall and/or a church group who might want to host/cater a meal for us. 3. Would you have access to other documents that would help with our family history? Any assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Regards Peter McLarty 1 Page 38 of 39 5.i) Correspondence dated February 13, 2014 from Lisa Pearso...
