As you may know, Simcoe County Farm Fresh is a grass-roots association of area farmers farmed in 2005 and became anon-profit corporation in 2007. The purpose of the Simcoe County Farm Fresh Marketing Association (SCFFMA) is to promote to consumersleaters, the environmental, economic and health benefits of buying locally produced food and more specifically, the excellent quality food produced and marketed within the County of Simcoe. We are contacting all municipal governments in Siimcoe County to ask far support in this project, as I am sure you are fully aware, support for our local farming community is extremely important to our local economy, as well as maintaining a healthy local food system. Plans far the 2008 marketing campaign and to help augment our newly designed website, www.simcoecauntyfarmfresh_.ca is producing the paper guide map. The map will list all member farms, farmers' markets and restaurants, in Simcoe County, complete with website links. This guide would serve to connect consumers-eaters directly to farms and businesses who are selling wholesome, nutritious, locally produced food. There are a number of our members who farm in Oro-Medonte. SCFFMA would welcome the partnership with Oro-Medonte with this initiative. The total cost of this project is $10,000. We are asking far $625.00 from each municipality to help with the costs of production. Other partners include, the County of Simcoe mapping department who are providing staff time to design a custom map for the project, and the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has assigned staff to provide healthy eating messages on the map. We are also seeking support from financial and economic development institutions. Our primary funder for the Farm Fresh project is from Agri-Food Canada through the Agricultural Adaptation Council. This funding covers mainly staff time. Our goal is to distribute 50,000 maps throughout Simcoe County by May, 2008. If you have any questions, please contact me at any time. I do look forward to hearing from you. The main objectives of the Blue Flag program are to improve our understanding of the coastal environment and to promote the incorporation of environmental issues in the decision- making processes of local authorities and their partners. In order to meet these objectives, the Blue Flag program brings together a variety of stakeholders and unites their efforts in the sustainable management and development of their coastal ecosystems. Now in its 20th year, the program has grown significantly in size and scope. In 2007, over 3200 beaches and marinas from around the world were awarded the Blue Flag including nine in Ontario. For more information: www.BlueFlag.ca or www.BlueFlau.or4 The purpose of the workshop is to: • introduce new beach operators to the program and provide an opportunity to speak and learn from those already participating; • share experiences and ideas between those already involved in the Blue Flag Program; • gain a better understanding of water quality issues, public health and lifesaving messages, developing educational activities as well as the importance of including tourism as a promotional/outreach tool; • engage and establish relationships with local environment groups and their involvement in the Blue Flag program including monitoring and educational activities; and • give updates on what Environmental Defence is doing and to discuss other issues that may impact Ontario's beaches 317 Adelaide Street West, Suite 705, Toronto, ON, M5V 1 P9, Tel: 416-323-9521 Fax: 416-323-9301, www.
