Deputy Reeve McEwen called the meeting to order when all present arrived at the site of the pro-
posed Commemorative Monument. The site being at the present Horticultural flower bed at the lake.
The proposal in question according to the sketch, previously presented at a Committee of Council
meeting consisting of a Commemorative Stone, 6" thick, approximately 26" high and 22" wide, with
a unistone walkway and widening position in front of the proposed monument.
Deputy Reeve McEwen asked Norman Emms, Chairman of the Canada Committee to relate the proposal
as shown on the sketch in relation to the flower bed.
From the explanation, it would appear that the proposal is to place the flag poles (2) south of
the flower b,od and one on each side of the bed with the Monument in the middle and unistone walk
around the flower bed and in front of the proposed area of the Monument. The proposal for the
walk being in a bell shape formation around the flower bed. The flag poles are to accommodate
the rope inside the pole.
All presented were given the opportunity to comment or ask questions, both of which were forthcoming
from mostly everyone present.
At conclusion of the question period, because of the cool, damp day, everyone moved inside to
the Booth area of the combined Booth and Living Quarters at the Park. Mrs. Gail Taylor had the
coffee pot ready for everyone to partake, during the continuation of the meeting.
Deputy Reeve McEwen, opened the meeting to questions.

ORO MEMORIAL PARK - CANADA DAY MEETING
.
Question by Howard Campbell:
If a monument is erected - what is the purpose - what is being commemorated? nothing existed at
this site 200 years ago.
Reply: All areas of Ontario are carrying out various projects in Bicentennial year and this pro-
posal could be dedicated to the people of Oro - past, present and future generations, since only
by such dedication may Oro continue to be as good a place to live as it has been in the past.
The inscription on the plaque was next discussed, after Deputy Reeve McEwen read two of the proposed
wordings.
Mr. Stephen Sanderson suggested the second one as one that appeared to cover the proposal and
had fewer words, since space was limited, it would appear as a good choice, or alternatively,
a combination of the two.
Deputy Reeve McEwen - A recommendation should go to Council for approval should Oro Council be
in agreement.
Howard Campbell Suggested that the matter of the dedicated Cairn should be settled first - Slnce
many rumors have it that this is being removed or moved.
It was concluded that this was only a rumor, not a proposal and after discussion, the following
action was taken:
Moved by Buffi Woronka and seconded by Don McArthur that the Kirkpatrick Cairn be properly re-
paired in order to preserve it. Motion carried.
Moved by Councillor Halfacre and seconded by Merrill Drake, that it is recommended to Oro Council
that the proposal for a Commemorative Monument, as reviewed from the sketch presented, be proceeded
with, with necessary modifications to accommodate the proposal, on the site in the area of the
present Horticultural flower bed. And, that the costs of same is to be bourne by the Canada Day
Committee. Motion Carried.
Norman Emms mentioned organizations that were donating time and material for this project.
Oro Horticultural Society flower bed care.
Loyal Orange Lodge (LOL 904) Hawkestone Flag Pole.
Oro District Lions Club Flag Pole ~ labour.
Unistone Walkway and Pad.
Robinson Hardware - pulley, rope, weights, etc., for flags.
Still required
Concrete for base, and stone work for base.
Keith Lees offered to donate up to 15 lbs. of Grass should it be proposed to seed rather than
sod.
Stephen Sanderson mentioned that they would try to clean up the Brass Plaque when erecting the
proposed Commemorative Monument.

ORO MEMORIAL PARK - CANADA DAY MEETING
D. Smith Campbell - mentioned that the names of the Centennial Council were inscribed in the cement
under the Bronze Plaque on the Kirkpatrick Cairn. Also, that the Hon. E.C. Drury had unveiled
the Plaque when it was dedicated at the opening of the Oro Memorial Park.
After discussion on the matter, it was moved by Howard Campbell, and seconded by Keith Lees that
it be recommended to Oro Council that the names of the Oro Council of the Oro Centennial Year
(1951) and the Clerk, be inscribed on a Bronze Plaque or granite stone, whichever is selected as
more suitable and that a price for this work be obtained from Sanderson Monuments Co. Ltd.
It was suggested and requested by D. Smith Campbell that since the Hon. E.C. Drury officially
unveiled the plaque and opened the Park, this should also be inscribed.
There being no further questions before adjournment, Norman Emms thanked Gail Taylor for the hos-
pitality and coffee.
Meeting adjourned at 10:55 a.m.
Following the meeting D. Smtih Campbell, Norman & Pat Emms, Stephen Sanderson, Dwight Taylor,
Keith Lees along with the Ad Hoc Committee, Deputy Reeve McEwen and Councillor Halfacre, met at
the Kirkpatrick Cairn with respect to the necessary repairs and also the matter of the Bronze
Plaque or granite stone for inscription of the Oro Centennial Council. It was suggested it could
appear appropriate, to place a slanted granite stone at the base of the Cairn to inscribe the
names.
Wording and copy of Bayview Memorial Park Booklet be forwarded to Sanderson Monuments.
