TOWNSHIP OF ORO-MEDONTE
HISTORY COMMITTEE MEETING
March 11,1996
The Township of Oro-Medonte History Committee met this evenin¡ at
the Township of Oro Administration Buildin¡ in the Committee Room,
in accordance with the resolution passed at the Committee meetin¡
held on February 19,1996.

The meetin¡ was opened by the Chairman at 7:35 p.m.

Minutes:
The Minutes of the last re¡ular meetin¡ held on February 19,
1996 were on motion of Jadeen Henderson and Walter
Hutchinson adopted as printed and received.

Presented a letter forwarded by the Secretary to G. Glen Parker
in response to his letter, which was presented to the last
meetin¡, forwardin¡ a copy of the John Robert Bell family tree
showin¡ names of descendants, includin¡ names Glen Parker had
referred to in his letter. This copy WaS one that Earl Robertson
had in his family history files.
Secretary advised that a cheque had been received from Lillian
(Rouse) Tennant for a copy of 'Kith'N' Kin' and that a copy
had been forwarded to her by Township Office staff, Feb. 21/96.
A letter from Scholastice Canada Ltd., Richmond,Hill, Ont.,
advisin¡ of a book entitled "Eleanor's Dairy" which is an
account of Upper Canada Canadian Life for early settlers~ the
book deals with the trials and triumphs of life in the l~30's.
Also enclosin¡ an order form. Several members of the Committee
are familiar with the book.
Presented a letter from the Deputy-Clerk reiardin¡ the openin¡
of the addition to the Administration Buildin¡, adVisin¡ that
only staff and Council were present in orderthat the epployees
could have a tour and become familiar with the new facility.
And further that should an'. official openin¡ be scheduled, the
History Committee would likely be invited. The letter is in
response to the concern of members of the Committee expressed
at the last meeting.
The Chairman presented a letter from the Oro Farm Boys, wishin¡
to express their appreciation to the members of the History
Committee for their participation in the Farm Herita¡e Day 2,
last fall with exhibits and displays that are always so informative
and enjoyed by everyone attendin¡. A special thank you to Tim
Crawford for his dedication to Herita¡e Days, with Video of
the harvesting of crops throu¡h square~. calling by Gordon

It was moved by Jadeen Henderson and seconded by Mary Garbutt tn&t
the Correspondence as presented and the action taken, be accepted
as satisfactory and same be filed tor reference. And that the book 8
entitled "Ealeanor1s Dairy" not be ordered for the History Committee.
The Chairman next informed the Committee that he had met with Norman
Hazlett of Forrest Home area and had enjoyed reminiscin¡ with him 01
times in his his olden days. He then presented Tim with several
account books - Rural School of the area and other books.
The Chairman also reported on the matter of the African Church.
Old & Unfinished Business
(a) Report from members attendin¡ the Oro-Medonte Parks and Recreation
Advisory Committee meetin¡ held on March 7,1996, at which the
Oro-Medonte Trail Association alon¡ with the Huronia Trails and
Greenways attended to . make a presentation with re¡ard to the
ab~ndonment of theCN Rail_line from Barrie to Orillia. As
advised in a letter from Rosemary Dunsmore, which had been presented
to the last meetin¡.
Members that attended the meeting - Loreen (Rice) Lucas, Earl
Robertson, Walter Hutchin~oq~APd Jadeen Henderson.
The members that attendedf~nãt it had been difficult to hear
the speaker with the slide and video presentation, therefore
not as many questions had been asked. It waS mentioned that
in cases like th4Sthe Municipality purchased the land and would
be responsible for updatin¡ the trail and maintenance of same.
A concern with respect to liability. ATV and Dirt Bikes would
not be permitted. It wqs left that the Parks and Recreation
Advisory Committee investi¡ate further by appointing a Committee
from within the Rec. Committee, Trails Association and possibly
a member from the History Committee. At least that appeared to
be the understanding of those attending from this Committee.
Report from the Chairman reiarding information to be included
in the Township Newsletter that would compliment the History
Committee, as had been requested in a memo presented to the
last meetin¡. The Chairman presented a draft of same which waS
a¡reed to by the members

Su¡gestions re¡arding notification. of meetin¡s or reschedulin¡
of same. It was left that present method of notification by
telephone be continued and that where applicalble message be
left on answering machine.
!he matter of Co-Chair from a member of the Former Medonte
area WaS again brought forward. Both members present from the
former Medonte area felt tha t they could not commit., to any
further positions at this time. It WaS left that the Chairman
approach Beverley Hunter as whether she would be interested.

1996 Projects - as well as what has been started to continue
with preparation for a booklet on the 1920's - documents -
family life - gather photos, etc. - open for further su¡gestions.
Workshop meetin¡ to plot information on Township map asb~~en
started. To meet at tee home of Mary Garbutt on Thursday

March l4, 1996 at 7:15 p.m. Continue with similar plotting of
important historic sites, cemeteries, Ch~rches, enterprises, etc.
At present very little has been marked at the map started,with
respect of the former Medonte area, since no members from that
area had been present at the last workshop meeting.
There bein~ no further matters brought before the meetin¡ it was
moved by Walter Hutchinson that the meeting adjourn to meet a¡ain
on Monday, April 8, 1996, unless otherwise notified.
