Minutes of the Meeting
January 26,1998
In Attendance: Tim Crawford, Jadeen Henderson, Walter Hutchinson, Eunice Johnston, Loreen
Lucas, Darlene Shoebridge.
Minutes of Last Meeting: no minutes were taken at a planning meeting held on Oct. 14. A work
day was scheduled for Nov. 06 but was cancelled due to illness.
1997 Projects:
Tim Crawford and Jadeen Henderson held history demonstrations for the Or 4's in the four
"old" Ora schools.
A meeting was held in African Church celebrating 150th Ann of the purchase of the land
There was a summer barbeque at Tim Crawford's.
Ran a booth at the fall fair and a video was made ofthe fair.
Ran a booth at the ploughing match. The back drop of the one room schoolroom made for
the booth is a permanent item.
Jadeen Henderson contributed furnishings to the pioneer home display at the ploughing
match.
Tim Crawford represented the committee at the unveiling of a Simcoe County Historical
Society plaque commemorating 125 years of black history in Collingwood.
Attendance at the inaugural luncheon and video of the inaugural.
A demonstration at Shanty Bay school of antique toys to junior grades in December.
Throughout the year Jadeen Henderson and Walter Hutchinson opened the African church
for viewing upon request, and showed various properties to people interested in where their
ancestors farmed.
The township map that suffered water damage when the storage room roof leaked has
been restored.
Garf and Annie Burton donated numerous items to the committee: tools, a map of Simcoe
County and magazines.
A gas light once used to illuminate the Guthrie skating rink was purchased from the
Burton's for $400.00
All requests for information about Oro families from people searching truer family history
are answered with photos, addresses and info. Tim Crawford replied to a Tim Crawford of
Chicago, USA with a copy of his own family tree.
Correspondence: INCOMING: letter ofthanks from Bill Heston for supporting the proposed
plaque to mark the J. C. Morrison which lies at end ofKempenfelt Bay.

OUTGOING: Letter of thanks to fair committee for loan ofa trailer.
Old business:
The Township now holds a deed to the African church. Copies of the letters concerning

ownership of the property will be turned over to the committee. A booklet will be prepared for
neXt years anniversary celebration.
Efforts will be made to find more people willing to serve on this committee; Jaydeen
Henderson has invited Karen Sanson, Tim Crawford will call George Monkrnan, Earl Robertson
will be asked to contact Jack Scott, and Loreen Lucas will speak to Joan Fletcher. These people
will be invited to attend the February meeting.
Tim Crawford will draft a letter to be sent out to everyone in the joint township informing
them of our book project. A letter will also be sent to all of the Women's Institutes offering to
JI¥d<e a project presentation at one of their fall meetings.
New ~siness:
Eunice Johnston will serve the committee as recording secretary.
Meetings wìti be held at home of Loreen Lùcas in Hawkstone.
Darlène Shoebridge has joined the committee. She will sort the items held in storage at the
township office.
Tim Crawford will check with the Simcoe County Museum about the Hawkstone plaque.
Jpanne McEwen took photos of some of our archival pictures at a cost of$8.00
H was suggested by an archivist that we could put our archival pictures on computer disk
so they could be more easily viewed and copied. Tim Crawford will check with Black's Camera
regarding the cost o-rt'ms project.
Loreen Lucas wm take care of getting a registn~tion # for our book "The Story of Oro"
whereupon two copies will be sent to the NationalLîbrary in Ottawa.
