Minutes of Oro-Medonte History Committee Meeting, Sept 02, 1998
held at home of Tim Crawford, barbeque supper followed.
Meeting called to order at 3:30
Present: Tim Crawford (chairman), Mary Garbutt, Jadeen Henderson, Walter & Pauline Hutchinson, Eunice
Johnston (recording secretary), Loreen Lucas, Earl Robertson, Bruce Wiggins.
1. Congratulations to Loreen on the publication of her second book, Apple Pie Philosophy.
2. Correspondence:
A. A letter was received from a group hired by the provincial government doing a heritage survey of the
Vocational Centre at Edgar, prior to the land being sold. This site was part of the Pine Tree Line of radar stations
during the 50's and 60's. An air force plaque currently on the site will be preserved. This was also the site of a
geodetic tower during the early part ofthis century (see item in the History ofOro). Tim will reply to the letter,
suggesting that a plaque commemorating the tower be erected.
B. Tim will write a letter in response to an item in the Toronto Tree (OGS) that advertises a family reunion, to
inform the organizer there are members of the Isle family in Oro.
3. African Episcopalian church:
A. The 150th anniversary ceremonies will be held on second Sunday in June 1999
I. Tim has already stated putting a commemorative booklet together.
ii Jadeen will take some photos of the building and one will be chosen for the plate.
iii. Earl will order the plates once the photo and wording has been finalized. Earl will pay any deposit
required, then Tim will go to council for the full amount payable on delivery.
iv. Bruce will produce an order form for presales, Tim will pick up a receipt book.
Motion by Loreen Lucas, that Carolyn Wilson of Collingwood by appointed as program chairperson. Seconded
by Mary Garbutt.
B. The Knights of Columbus contacted Tim requesting that the building be opened during a car rally to be held
Oct. 18, 1998. The African church is their first check point. Someone will need to be there from 2-3 :30.
C. Walter opened the building last spring at the request of a woman from Barrie who brought about 25 people to
view the site. These descendants of the pioneer, Thomas were from many places including Vancouver, Alberta,
North Bay, and Connecticut.
D. Loreen happened to be passing and stopped to talk to a couple who were looking at the building. The woman,
another descendant, purchased a copy of the History of Oro.
E. Ground radar has located the graves on the property. Jadeen suggested grave markers might be erected each
grave at some future date.
F. Carolyn Lucas has requested a conference with this committee, after having received a visit from Gary French
and Mrs Cole Davenport.
4. Oro World's Fair: Sept, 17-18-19
The school display will be used, backdrop can be covered with a canvas and small items placed in the
trailer at night. It was requested by the committee that Tim dress in costume.
Tickets are provided to committee members volunteering at the fair. Someone may need to judge the
essay contest. Three books will be awarded on Friday evening.
5. Book Project: Tim has started work on Memories of Medonte, Eunice volunteered to help.
6. Letter from the council assures the history committee of $1600.00 for CDROM project, $2500.00 for the
Hawkstone plaque, and $5000.00 for publishing in 1998 A further $2500.00 for Glouster Rd. Plaque in 1999
and another $2500.00 for Penetang Rd plaque in 2000.
7. Congratulations to Earl and his wife on the celebration of their 50 wedding anniversary.
