Minutes ofthe Oro-Medonte History Committee Meeting, January 12, 1999
held at the township office. Called to order at 1 :45 pm
Present: Crawford (chairman), Walter Hutchenson, Eunice Johnston, Loreen Lucas.
Motion by Eunice J to accept minutes of the last meeting, seconded by Walter H. Carried
Business arising:
1. The slides sent to Seattle W A have been returned and were placed in filing cabinet in the
vault. A stack of CDs each containing 20 photographs are accompanied by an index card. At some
future date the CDs will be condensed to 1 or 2 only for sale to local schools.
2. Tim submitted an account to Lynda Achen for $477.45 to cover price of having the slides
transferred to CD, insurance during mailing and other minor expenses. Payment received.
3. Tim purchased a scanner for his personal use and has been doing some work on old photographs
but it is very time consuming, so our project to place file photographs on CD has been postponed.
4. Tim and Eunice visited Guthrie and Shanty Bay schools November to inform the principals of
our book project and invite their students to participate. Tim also visited the Coldwater and
Warminster schools. The Warminster school is currently working on a history of their school and
will share their finished project with us. will prepare guidelines for the teachers of the other
schools; students can work on a family scrap book, do a family tree, or
5. It was decided to stretch the millennium book to the mid-century mark, so it will now included
the 1920s 30s and 40s.
6. The proposed Web Site has not materialized.
New Business:
1. A subcommittee consisting of Jadeen Henderson and Eunice Johnston was formed to chose items
from the files for the millennium book.
2. A subcommittee consisting of Sheila Kirkland, Marilyn Gregory, and Morris Shelswell was
formed to finalize the erection of the Hodges Landing plaque. plague will be placed inside the
gates of the Girl Guide Property at Hawkstone on the original Hodges property. The community
moved from the dock up to the railroad when trains took over from steamboats.
3. The girl guides will be asked to submit a history of their camp the millennium book.
4. It was suggested that we have any photographs our files that do not have the identity of people
or places marked on them, printed in the local paper (Barrie Advance) asking for names.
5. Eunice will represent this committee at the Simcoe County Museum on February 15.
6. Motion by Walter Hutchinson, seconded by Loreen Lucas Eunice represent this committee
at the board meetings of Simcoe County Historical Society.
Anniversary of Black Church:
1. Carolyn Wilson has agreed to prepare the program and Wilf Sheffield to preach the sermon.
2. Tim has write a first draft History of the Black Church. This includes the New Year's Eve article
written by Martha Graham. look for a better picture of Mark Bush. Walter and Loreen
have read and partially approved the draft. It will now go to Carolyn and Wilf for their approvaL
3. In keeping with tradition pictures ofthe township council and the committee will be
included in the book.
4. Tim drafted a statement for the mayor and councilors to sign, for inclusion in the book.
Visit from Mayor Beard to our meeting. He has a picture of the first grader ever purchased by
the township and a photo ofthe first committee he ever sat as a councilior.
