Minutes of the Oro-Medonte History Committee meeting for October 12, 1999
Business Items:
Present: Geoffrey Booth, Tim Crawford (chairman), Mary Garbutt, Jadeen Henderson, Eunice Johnston
(recording secretary), Loreen Lucas, Allan Howard, Bruce Wiggins.
Minutes of last meeting approved as read; moved by Mary Garbutt, seconded by Geoff Booth. Carried
Next meeting November 09, 1999 at the township office, time 7:30
Old Business:
.. Oro Fair booth was well attended, books from 1980's on display were popular.
.. Coldwater Fair - a number of good leads because of the display and brochure.
.. Presentation to council was received a positive response, our request for a storage area and
permission to receive artifacts has been forwarded to a sub-committee.
Medonte book has passed the first deadline without completion of the research, there is more
information to collect and more photos to be taken. Mary has several large families completed but
there is still a lot more to do. Tim and Jadeen continue to spend three days a week on the road
visiting century farms. About 50% of the township is yet to be covered. Material is still coming in. A
man in Orillia who is researching Orange Lodges in Medonte (he has also done Oro) has offered
copies of his research to this committee.

.. Clowes Women's Institute's Tweedsmere will be encapsulated.
.. Coldwater Museum Project-
.. Transcription book on St. George's Fairvalley Cemetery is completed.
.. Loreen Lucas announced her retirement from the committee after 31 years of service to the
township. Loreen was one of the original members, joining when Howard Campbell first suggested
to council that a committee be formed. "It's nice to see so many young people taking an interest.
May God bless you." Loreen said as she left.
Action Items:
.
the price of Kith and Kin will be raised to $25.00
the price of Story of Oro will be lowered to $2.00
Hawkstone Plaque can be produced with just text with the fund available from council, or with a
map of Hawkstone for an additional $1000. Motion by Tim Crawford, seconded by Jadeen
Henderson that this committee approach SCRA asking them to co-sponsor the plaque by making a
donation of$1000. Carried.
Jadeen, Tim, and Geoffrey will attend the Oct 26 meeting of Simcoe County Historical Society
Eunice Johnston will have the our delegation placed on SCHA's agenda
Sub-committee was formed to plan for a Y2k plaque in the Medonte area; Mary Garbutt, Allan
Howard, Geoffrey Booth, Bruce Wiggins, and Jadeen Henderson volunteered.
Tim will be presenting a talk to the retired teachers in Alliston on Oct 24. Bruce Wiggins will assist
him in moving the large display unit of an old time class room.

An elderly lady wrote from western Canada, looking for information about her long lost brother who
served with the OPP in the Oro area as a young man. Geoffwill show the letter to so retired police
officers that he knows in an attempt to locate the man.
Tim will respond to a request for information about the book Kith and Kin
Tim will report to council on the progress of the Medonte book
Eunice will do a financial report on the funds collected during service at the Oro African church last
June.
costs of photography fro the Medonte book are mounting up and members would like to submit a
bill to council. Motion by Jaydeen henderson, seconded by Bruce Wiggins that tim advise council of
the costs incured to date and costs anticipated and request an advance from book fund of$1000.
Carried.
Jadeen requested an inventory sheet so that any items the committee receives from the Newfeld
family can be recorded.
Tim will draft an agreement to cover anything received before the council makes a decision so that
items can be returned to the family if necessary.

Brain Storming Items:
" a Y2K plaque could be erected at one ofthree points in Medonte that a close to the Glouster Rd.
This Indian trail used by the settlers to get from Hillsdale to Coldwater is no longer in existence.
a plaque could be erected to John Steele, who served as Reeve ofMedonte, could be placed at
Fairvalley during the Sir Sam Steele/Strathcona celebrations next summer. Two other Steele
brothers also served in the North West Mounted Police.
A Wall of Fame to honour those who served the township such as the recently retired Earl
Robertson, Walter Hutchison and Loreen, past committees as well as Howard Campbell and Henry
Newfeld. The Newfeld Room would be an ideal spot to hang pictures or plaques.

look for volunteers who might work at the fair but do not wish to sit on the committee

In Appreciation:
.. council will be honouring retiring history committee members will the presentation of plaques at a
council meeting.
the history committee will honour our friends and colleagues with a dinner to be held at Tim
Crawford's, and an appropriate historic item complete with brass plaque or mounted on a plaque.
councilors will be invited to the dinner or a lunch following the presentation by council.
