Minutes of the Oro-Medonte History Committee
January 06, 2000
Present: Geoffrey Booth, Tim Crawford (chairman), Mary Garbutt, Allan Howard, Eunice Johnston,
and Bruce Wiggins.
Meeting held at the township office was called to order at 7:45
Minutes of the last meeting were discussed and approved by a Motion from Geoffrey Booth, seconded by
Bruce Wiggins. Carried

Business arising:
.. Geoffrey Booth will sit with Mary and Allan, on the sub-committee formed at the December meeting
to decide on a location in Medonte for a plaque.
we are still waiting to hear from Simcoe County Historical Association about assistance in producing
the Hawkstone plaque.
the Medonte book research is progressing well, but there is still more interview work to do.
Mary, Tim and Allan will attend the township office openhouse on Feb. 02 and set up a display.

Action Items
.. Geoffrey Booth will head up a sub-committee to begin work on the second book
.. Eunice Johnston will try to come up with a title for the book
.. Bruce Wiggins will place paid ads in Orillia Today asking people to send in their 1920-30-40's
stories for the second book
Tim Crawford will ask the Mayor to invite the Governor General to attend a service at the Oro
African church on the afternoon of July 13 in preparation for the possibility that the building be
named a National Historic Site
Eunice Johnston will get David Morris' phone number and Tim Crawford will contact him about
doing a re-enactment of Sir Sam Steele in July.
Letters written and signed by Sir Sam Steele, that were discovered when researching the Medonte
book, will be framed and donated to the Anglican church at Fairvalley.

Correspondence:
.. a letter was received from the person who inspected the Oro African church as part of our application
to name it a National Historic site. His report will be given to the sites committee shortly.
a letter of thanks from Earl Robinson for the luncheon and gifts given by this committee to our three
retiring members. A framed copy of the mayors speech and a video of the presentation was presented
to each one in December.
there was a call from Glen Hodges in Michigan, he has traced his ancestry back to Hodges of the
Landing now Hawkstone. Tim is sending him information.
an e-mail from Paul Robin's, who operated a store and Bed and Breakfast business in Craighurst,
with information about his mother's family who arrived in Medonte in 1861

Motion to adjourn by Allan Howard. Next meeting will be held at township office, 7:30 on Feb. 03, 2000
Pre-meeting discussion: on July 13, 2000 the Lord Strathcona regiment will replace the existing flag poles
and the plaque at Fairview with poles an inscribed in honour of Sir Sam Steele. There will be a
parade featuring the regimental horses. This committee would like to plan an event in conjuntion.
