Oro-Medonte History Committee Meeting
May 25, 2000
Present: Tim Crawford (chair), Mary Garbutt, Jaydeen Henderson, Eunice Johnston, Geoffiey
Booth, Allan Howard, and George Monkman.
Minutes of March 08 meeting were hand written by Sheila Kirkland.
Motion to accept by Jadeen Henderson. Seconded by Mary Garbutt..
Business Arising:
. Funds from the Medonte Historical Society were transferred to the Medonte Book
account with Mary Garbutt, Sheila Kirkland, and Tim Crawford named as signing officers.
the Sir Sam Steele letters in the possession of Sheila Robertson were given to the Simcoe
County Archives, the Orillia Museum of Art and History, and the OPP museum.
2 work meetings were held, the pictures have been sorted, the negatives had been placed
in a binder. Allan Howard is scaning the pictures onto computer disc.
there was a good response to the newspaper advertisment, information was recieved on
many names not listed. Discussion about whether a second advertisement should run.
Motion by Geoffiey Booth, seconded by Allan Howard, that $75.00 be spent on an adv in
Community News published by Murray Martin, with closing date (June 30) for photos or
information to be sent to the committee. Carried.
Tim will submit a photo of a lady with her family photos and an article.
Lynda Achen gave Tim a large pile of minutes from the period when Henry Newfeld was
clerk. Tim will return then to her for filing, unless they are copies.
History Committee minutes should be filed at the township office for future referance.

Information Items:
. Tim Crawford was asked to video the Rejoice 2000 celebrations being held at Guthrie
Arena on Sunday, May 28.
it will not be known for several months yet if the African church will be designated as a
National Historic Site.
the Governor General will attend that ceremony, likely in June of2001
there has been no action on motion made in October to increase the price of Kith and Kin
diaries and photos dating back to 1832 were received by Jadeen Henderson from the Muir
family.
$3,500.00 is in reserve for the Hawkstone/Hodges Landing plaque. A donation of
$1000.00 was received from Simcoe County Historical Association. Thompkins and Heels
can supply the plaque within 3 months. Plaque will be placed on the fire hall property. This
comer requires landscaping. Tim has asked his brother for advice.
Sheila Kirkland will be asked to call a meeting of the plaque committee to determine a
date for the unveiling. Geoffiey Booth has been added to this committee.
new township budget shows a publishing reserve of$5000. It is estimated we will require
an additional 20,000.
Motion by George Monkman, seconded by Mary Garbutt, that council be approached
with estimates for publishing the Medonte book, in a format similar to Kith and Kin.

.. letter of thanks to SCHA for the donation to Hawkstone plaque
.. letter of thanks to the donor of a painting of the African church.
.. letter to Parks Canada informing them that there is no sign on County Rd 93 (formerly
Highway 93) to direct travellers to the African Church.
Incoming:
.. Parks and Canada have added the African church to their Ontario Black Heritage tour.
. Simcoe County Archives have processed items donated some time ago that were given to
Tim by the Base Borden high school.
Inquiry from New York about a Mrs Robert Johnston of Rugby. Farm was identified.
Orillia Library forwarded a request form Winnipeg regarding the Nash house. Committee
member George Monkrnan lives in that house. The Librarian remarked that the history
committee is a wonderful source of information. Every time she phones her questions are
always answered.

.. Committee needs a key to the front gate, the clerks office and the freezer.
.. books need to be defrosted
.. notice of celebrations at Fairvalley will be place in June issue of SCHA newsletter.
.. Letter was written to Garfield Dunlop asking that a sign be place at comer of County Rd.
93 and Old Barrie Rd, no response. Perhaps the county should be approached.
