Parks & Recreation Manager Monthly Report:
Programming:
a)
Programming of historically based projects is to continue
such as Public Skating and Day Camp. There will be no
direct programming performed by the Manager such as Ball
Hockey. Indirect programming is an option when people
from the community present ideas to Committee and Council
and when authorization is received run these programs
themselves. A proposal such as described is expected to
be forthcoming and will be reviewed upon presentation.
b)
Ice Bookings:
Ice bookings during the day time hours are up over last
year and no prime time bookings were lost due to the time
changes for some groups. Barrie Minor Hockey has booked
the Arena with ice that was open for bookings. Revenues
are expected to be up for the year and two companies are
interested in running a Hockey School in August which
will be discussed at a later date.
c)
O.M.R.A. Conference Update:
There were 63 delegates registered and 12 Associates for
product display. Of the evaluations handed in, most were
of a positive nature. The negative response received
addressed the cost of the accomodation, the topics, the
food and the hospitality suite. Problems did occur with
regard to the business dealings with Horseshoe but the
service from staff was excellent. As a result of the
conference, discussion occurred regarding zero tolerance
in sports and property damage which will be addressed in
detail at a future meeting.

THE COLDW ATER & DISTRICT CURLING CLUB, ORIGINALL Y STARTED
CURLING IN COLDWATER, IN THE LOCAL ARENA. AT THAT TIME, THE CLUB
HAD APPROx. 100 CURLERS. IT WAS A SPORT THAT WAS ENJOYED BY
MANY OF THE VILLAGE RESIDENTS, ALONG WITH RESIDENTS FROM THE
SURROUNDING TOWNSIDPSNILLAGES. EVEN THOUGH THE ICE WAS OFTEN
UNEVEN, SCRATCHED AND MELTING AT TIMES, THE CURLERS ENDURED.
BETWEEN ICE SKATING AND HOCKEY, THE ARENA WAS SHARED WITH THE
CURLERS. AFTER, AS YEARS WENT BY, THE DEMAND FOR THE ARENA,
ALONG WITH THE DESIRE OF THE CURLERS TO HAVE A SMOOTH ICE
SURFACE, THE CURLING ACTIVITIES WERE MOVED TO ORILLIAIMIDLAND
FACILITIES. NUMBERS OF CURLERS HA VE SUBSEQUENTL Y DROPPED DUE
TO THE DISTANCE, WEATHER CONDITIONS, AND THE HOURS THAT THESE
OTHER CURLING FACILITIES HAD AVAILABLE.
WITH THE HELP OF INDIVIDUALS, BUSINESS' AND VOLUNTEERS, THE
COLDW A TER & DISTRICT CURLING CLUB IS PLANNING TO BUILD A NEW
RECREATIONAL/CURLING CENTRE FOR THE COMMUNITY AND
SURROUNDING AREA. THIS BUILDING WILL BE LOCATED CLOSE TO THE
PRESENT COLDW A TER ARENA. THIS FACILITY WILL BE MULTI-PURPOSE
FOR USE BY VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS, SERVICE CLUBS, NURSERY
SCHOOLS, THEATRE GROUPS, ETc., IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT THIS
FACILITY WILL BE A CENTRE TO BE ENJOYED FOR SOCIAL AND
RECREATIONAL PURPOSES.
THE CURLING SURF ACE WILL CONSIST OF FOUR SHEETS OF ICE ON A
CEMENT BASE THAT COULD BE USED DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS
FOR OTHER SPORTS. A LOUNGE/COMMUNITY ROOM IS ALSO TO BE
INCLUDED IN THE PLANS.
GOVERNMENT GRANTS WILL BE APPLIED FOR, AND ALTHOUGH WE HOPE
THAT THEY WILL BE QUITE HELPFUL, INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTIONS AND
BUSINESS CONTRIBUTIONS ARE GREATLY NEEDED. ANYONE WISHING TO
MAKE A DONATION CAN DO SO BY MAIL TO ROSS CLARKE, TREASURER,
RECREATIONAL PROJECT, BOX 431 COLDWATER, ONTARIO LOKIEO OR IN
PERSON AT THE COLDW A TER MEDICAL CENTRE, 45 RIVER ST. COLDW A TER,
ONTARIO.
WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE COMMUNITY AND INDIVIDUALS, WE HOPE TO
START CONSTRUCTION IN THE SUMMER OF 1995. ANY DONATIONS OVER
.
$10.00 WILL HAVE A TAX EXEMPT RECEIPT ISSUED. WE WOULD LIKE TO
THANK ALL OF THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS
PROJECT, AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT.
