TOWNSHIP OF ORO HISTORY COMMITTEE
MEETING - May 10.1988
The Township of Oro History Committee met this evenin~ at the
call of the Chairman and as scheduled on adjournment of the last
Regular Meetinc, in the Oro Township Committee Room. All members
havin~ been notified by receivin~ the minutes of April 6,1988.
The following members were present:

Henry Neufeld
Absent:
Joanna McEwen, Marlene Mawdsley, Ruth Fraser, Walter
Hutchinson and Jean Cameron.
Openin~ - The meetin~ was opened by the Chairman at 7:20 p.m.
Minutes - The Minutes of the last Regular Meeting held on
April 6, 1988, had been forwarded to all members.
It was moved by Howard Campbell and seconded by Loreen
Lucas that the Minutes of the last regular meetin¡ held
on April 6, 1988, be adopted as printed and received.
Carried.
Business ar1sin~ from the Minutes - meetinc of April 6,1988
(a) Resolutions of Council in response to Committee resolutions
passed at the meetin~ held on April 6,1988, as set out in
letter from AdministratDr/Clerk, dated April 25,1988.

tlIt is recommended that the book entitled 'The Story of Oro'
second edition, be advertised in the Township of Oro Sprin~
Newsletter." carried

tlIt is recommednded that the Administrator/Clerk report back
to Council on suggested areas for a bulletin board within the
Municipal Buildin~.tI carried.

"It is recommended that the Administrator/Clerk advise the
Oro Township History Committee that they may attend a future
Committee of the Whole meetin~ to discuss loaation of pictures
to bè hun~ in the New Municpal Buildin~." carried
(b) Secretary's Report on telephone calls to the Ontario Black
History Society and coresspondence regardin~ the Memorial
Service at the African Church.
A number of telephone calls were made both by the Secretar~
and the Administrator/Clerk which resulted in finally receivin~
a letter in response to letter from the History Committee of
January and further letter dated March 8,1988, advising that
Dr. Paul Anderson, Prèsident of the Ontario Black History Society
will bring greetings as President. And, that approximately 10
to 15 members of the Society will attend the Memorial Service.

Also that three Ministers in Toronto and Area had been contacted
regarding the Sermon at the Service but to date of the letter no
response had been received.
Secretary also reported that he had contacted Croline Wilson in
Collingwood who had advised that a choir from their group would
participate, as well as possibly a Solist, but would confirm this
after they held a meetine of the Choir. A further telephone call
was made by the Secretary on May 9,1988 at which she advised that
the choir would attend and sing two selections or more, letter to
confirm to follow. Also would like a Program Brochure which they
would circulate in the Churches of the area and Stores. They would
be obtainine a Bus as it was expected that up to 50 people would
be attendine from the Collingwood area. She also asked if funds
were available to help pay for the Bus. I advised that this re~est
would be passed on to the Black History Society. She also suggested
that Rev. Wilfred Sheffield, Sundridge, Ontario be contacted as he
is very intereàted in the African Church and has family connections,
and has attended previous services. Secretary advised that he had
written Rev. Sheffield extending an invitation to be the guest speaker
and that he had replied by telephone advising that he could not
attend on June 12th, but would be delighted to take the Service if
it could be post-poned to the next Sunday. A previous committment
for thet Sunday.
It was moved by Loreen Lucas and seconded by Howard Campbell
that the resolutions of Council, as presented, be received and
filed for reference and action.
IT WAS MOVED BY Howard Campbell and seconded by Loreen
Lucas that the Secretary's report and action, accepted as
satisfactorll.
Correspondence. Communications. etc.
(a) Presented letter from the Black History Society
(b) Secretary's Report - as above
(c) Copy of Secretary's letter to Rev. Wilfred Sheffield
(verbal reply as reported above)
(d) Letter from Clerk/Administrator forwarding resolutions or
Council, as listed above under business arising from the
Minutes of the last regular meeting.
(e) Letter from Mrs. Viola Harrison regardin error in the 'Story
of Oro:- Postmaster for Hawkestone Post Office should read
Thomas Stone not 'Mrs. Thomas Stone, Postmistress. Advisine
that she had brought this to the attention of the Township and
requested that this be corrected, should another book be
published. The correction has not been made in the 'Update
of the story of Oro' in the 198~ publication.
It was moved by Loreen Lucas and seconded by Howard Campbell
that an errata ~,þ~ prepa,red correcting this error and that a
copy of such errata be inserted in every book sold and that
a copy of the errata be forwarded to Mrs. Viola Harrison
advising her of the action taken.
(f) Presented a copy of the Clerk/Administrator's letter to
Geoff H. Mulholland, Warden, St. Thomas Anglican Church,
Shanty Bay with respect to designating the Church as an
Historic Site. Letter advises of specific requirements for
such designations and suggests that should the request be

one that the Warden's wish to pursue, that an appointment be
made with the Township of Oro History Committee.
It was left that the matter be filed until further word is
received from the Wardens of St. Thomas Church.
Presented letter from the Administrator/Clerk enclosing a
cory of a program for the Official dedication of the addition
to the Tiny Township Municipal Office which had included a
a brief History of the Municipal Offices and places that the
early Councils had held their meetings and where the Clerk's
had carried out the administrative work. Oro Council would
like to have a similar history included in their program of
the Official opening of the New Township Offices. Letter is
a request of the History Committee to supply a brief
commentary on how and where Council and Administration carried
out its business since it's incorporation to present day.
After consideration of the letter by the members present
it was moved by Howard Campbell and seconded by Loreen Lucas
that the Chairman and Secretary be a Committee of two for the
preparation of a brief summary and commentary as requested
by Council.
All members of this Committee are invited to assist
and sufply any information that may be used in the commentary.

New Business
(a) Program for Memorial Service at: the African Church - Sunday,
June 12th, 1988.
This matter was discussed by the members þresant
with the following result:-

Chairman to approach the Minister of West Oro Baptist Church
and invite him to be the guest Speaker - also to approach and
arrange to hold the service at the West Oro Baptist Church
should the weather not be suitable for the outdoor service at
the African Church on June 12th.
The Township of Oro Council be rèquested to arrange:-
- with the O~P.P. re: Park1ni~ along the Roadside - since
parking will be for a period of 3 hours or more.
- Obtaining and placing of a Portable Toilet
- Write the Clowes Womens Institute re: Cleaning of the
Church for the occasion and serving the refreshments
after the Service (The Clowes W.I. have been approached
verbally by several of the Committe members and they have
agreed to do so)- Mrs. E. Martin, President.
- The Secretary has made arrangement with Kent Dempsey for to
supply a P.A. System and Org~n Key Board for the music.
- Committee to be responsible to have sufficient chairs available
on the site for the day.
- The Township Administrative Staff be responsible for the

the typing and photo-copying of the Programs - Mrs. Loreen
Lucas has supplied the Art-work of the Church which is to be
used on the front page of the program.
200 hundred copies are to be made of the Frogram

~ arrangements have been made for a Minister as the Speaker,
the Committædelegated to prepare the program are to get same
put together as soon as possible in order that copies may be mailed

It was moved by Henry Neufeld and sconded by Loreen
Lucas that the meeting adjourn at 9:00 p.m. to meet
again on Tuesday May 31,1988 at 7:15 p.m. unless
other wise notified.
