05 31 1988 History Minutes Co> T9WNS~IF OF ORO HISTORY COMM~ MEETING - May 31,1988 8 The Township of Oro History Committee met this evening at the Township of Oro Municipal Building in the Committee Room as scheduled at the last re¡ularhmeeting held on May 10,1988. All members having been notified according to the minutes of the last Regular Meeting. The followiñg Members were present: Opening - Minutes - Howard Campbell Wallace Key Loreen Lucas Joanna McEwen Marlene Mawdsley Henry Neufeld Walter Hutchinson Absent: - Ruth Fraser; Jean Cameron The Meeting was opened by the Chairman at 7:30 p.m. The Minutes of the last regular meeting held on May 10,1988 had been printed and forwarded to all members:- It was moved by Loreen Lucas and seconded by Joanna McEwen that the minutes of May 10,1988 be adopted as printed and received. Business arising frmm the Minutes - of meeting of May 10, 1988 Secretary's reports on matter listed on the Agenda as Business arising fromthe Minutes were reviewed and further considered as necessary/on the following item:- 8 (a) (b) (c) Copies of the Program for June 12th Memorial Service at the African Church were presented to each members as had been typed and photo copied by Staff at the Township 6ffice Secretary advised that he had presented a copy of a summary prepared by Himself and concurred with by Wallace Key, of the History of Township Council's, AdministrJtion over the years and where meetings had been held, etc. Secretary advised that Rev. Frank Stevens of Orillia would be giving the Sermon at the Memorial Service on June 12th, and that Rev-. William Solomon would be representing the Ontario Black History Society. It was moved by Howard Campbell and seconded by Walter Hutchinson that the report of the Secretary on business arising from the Minutes of May 10th, be accepted as satisfactory. Correspondence and Communications Presented copies of letters forwarded to Rev. Wilfred Sheffield inviting him to be the guest Speaker and letter a£knowledging his telephone response advising that he would not be able to accept for that Sunday due to previous commitment. Also copy of letter to the Ontario Black History Society aàvising that Rev. Frank Stevens would be giving the Sermon 8 - 2 - '" at the Memorial Service on June 12th and should a ~inister be attending from the Black History Society he would be assisting. Also forwarding a draft copy of the Program for their assistance. Secretary reported receiving several telephone calls from Craig Melbone enquiring about the Bell Family in Oro to enable him to trace the family history and .vise~ that he had suggested that he call Victor Bell in Hawkestone. Which he had done and returned a call stating that Victor Bell turned out to be a cousin and that he had given him satisfactory information. 8 Presented a letter from F.J. Payne, Victoria, B.C. to Alex. JohBston, R.R. #2 Hawkestone with respect to erecting a plaque in memory of the author Marian Keith (born Esther Miller) ~h9 had lived in the area of Rugby and. ' It was moved by Walter Hutchinson and seconded by Lpreen Lucas that the Correspondence and Communications, as presented, be received and filed or forwarded as directed. 8 Moved by Joanna McEwen and seconded by Marlene Mawdsley that the Oro Township History Committee are in favour of the request from Mr. F.J. Payne and recommend that the lêtter from F.J. Payne, Victoria, B.C. to Alex. Johnston, R.B. #2 Hawkestone, Ontario and enclosing copy of letter as forwarded to the Senior Consultant Heritage Organization, Ministry of Culture and be referred to the Simcoe County Historical Sites Committe, in care of Howard Campbell, with a resolution of Oro Council supporting the proposal to erect a plaque in memory of the Author Marian Keith (born Esther Miller) who had written many poems and had lived in the Rugby and Edgar Area. New Business - finalization of matters for the Memorial Service (a) The Chairs and tables to be bpought to the Church by members of the Committee on Sunday moring June 12th from the Town Hall and Edgar Hall (approx. 75 form each hall) (b)- Secretary to confirm with the Administrator/Clerk as to shether the O.P.P. have bèen contacted re: parking - reminøer to have a portable Toilet on the Site for June 12. - Advertising of the Memorial Service (c) (d) Loreen Lucas and Howard Campbell to speak to local eommunity NewSreporters to have the Service mentioned in there write-up. It was left that Joanna McEwen be responsible to have sufficient photo copies made of the History of the African Church to be ins~rted in the Programs. Howard Campbell advised thet it would appear that on the last count of the recent publications that their are - 550 Kith 'N Kin and 1300 Story of Oro (2nd edition) 8 Howard Campbell suggested that someone else take over the responsibility of the pictures and ~howing of the Slides to interested Groups - he found it difficult to operate the Slide Projector if problems arose with it. ,,' 8 8 8 - 3 - It was suggested that nothing be changed at this time and Joanna McEwen indicated that she would assist in this regard whenever possible. It was moved by Joanna McEwen and seconded by Marlene Mawdsley that the Reeve be requested to advise the Oro Township History Committee of the status of the designation of the Fenetan¡uishene Road as a Heritage Road, which was introduced many years ago. .., It was moved by Joanna McEwen and seconded by Henry Neufeld that the Oro Township History Committee recommend that at least some of the pictures be displayed in the New Township Muni- cipal Building for the opening, in particular the three generations of Clerk/Treasures, which were dedicated and presented to the Township by the Family and Nquested that they be on display to the Public at all times in the Township Buildiilgo Adjournment It was moved by Loreen Lucas and seconded by Henry Neufeld that the meeting adjourn at 9:45 p.m., to meet again at the call of the Chairman.
